How the NFL’s first-round selections fit with their new teams:
1. Tampa Bay
Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State: Lovie Smith has been less than excited about Mike Glennon, and Winston is the top passer in his class. An improvement from two wins to six in his rookie season would be welcomed in Tampa.
2. Tennessee
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon: The Titans have their quarterback of the future after toying with their fans and others that Zach Mettenberger could possibly be the guy. Mariota has speed and arm skill.
3. Jacksonville
Dante Fowler Jr., OLB, Florida: The Jaguars needed defensive help badly, despite finishing tied for sixth in the NFL in sacks. Fowler enhances a defense that needs to create turnovers for a bad offense.
4. Oakland
Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama: The Raiders don’t have any receivers, and second-year quarterback Derek Carr finally has someone to throw to. Last year Oakland had the worst passing offense in the league.
5. Washington
Brandon Scherff, OL, Iowa: The first surprise of draft night, Washington will use this hog molly and move him inside to guard to help its rushing attack led by Alfred Morris and a maybe-healthy RGIII.
6. N.Y. Jets
Leonard Williams, DL, Southern California: Williams is the best player in the draft and somehow fell into the lap of the team with an already stout defensive line. He can play anywhere coach Todd Bowles wants him to play along the line.
7. Chicago
Kevin White, WR, West Virginia: John Fox needed help on the defense, but the Bears give Jay Cutler one more weapon to try to make the offense work in the Windy City. They picked one of the best in this year’s class.
8. Atlanta
Vic Beasley, OLB, Clemson: The Falcons allowed more yards than any other defense in the league last year. Beasley, who played defensive end with the Tigers, will play in space in the NFL.
9. N.Y. Giants
Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami: Eli Manning was continuously banged around last season and the Giants decided to get him some help. Flowers plays with a nasty streak and could start on the right side immediately.
10. St. Louis
Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia: The Rams again go with a skill position player by taking the best running back in the class. Rams averaged 4.1 yards per attempt as a team last year.
11. Minnesota
Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State: The Vikings had a pretty good passing defense but needed help at corner. Waynes will start across from Xavier Rhodes, and Captain Munnerlyn can slide into his more natural nickel role.
12. Cleveland
Danny Shelton, DT, Washington: A year after blowing it with Johnny Manziel, the Browns do the smart thing and take the best player available to be their nose tackle.
13. New Orleans
Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford: A good punch with a thick lower body, Peat will be able to fend off good pass rushers in a division that has plenty of them. The Saints get more protection for quick-trigger Drew Brees.
14. Miami
DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville: Miami believes Ryan Tannehill is the guy at quarterback, so the Dolphins give him sure hands to throw to after missing on Mike Wallace and adding Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings this offseason.
15. San Francisco (traded to San Diego)
Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin: The Chargers had no rushing game before this pick, and Gordon is the second-best back in the draft. He may not keep Philip Rivers from leaving the Chargers should the team move to Los Angeles, but he at least helps.
16. Houston
Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest: Already with a formidable pass-rush group, the Texans add the cornerback with the best hips in the class. Johnson moves smoothly, but don’t ask him to tackle in the open field.
17. San Diego (traded to San Francisco)
Arik Armstead, DE, Oregon: Armstead is a 6-foot-7 freak who could eventually replace Justin Smith and bring back the 49ers’ defense to where it should be.
18. Kansas City
Marcus Peters, CB, Washington: Peters was kicked off the Huskies team after getting in an argument with an assistant coach. Kansas City never picks a receiver even though it needs one, and the Chiefs take the troubled corner.
19. Cleveland (from Buffalo)
Cam Erving, OL, Florida State: The Browns follow up a smart pick in Shelton with another smart pick. Erving can play tackle or center, and the Browns have a great offensive line room.
20. Philadelphia
Nelson Agholor, WR, Southern California: After striking out on securing a trade for Mariota, Chip Kelly settled for adding a weapon for whomever his quarterback may be.
21. Cincinnati
Cedric Ogbuehi, OT, Texas A&M: Ogbuehi is coming off a torn ACL in a bowl game, so he may not be ready Week 1. But he could have been the best tackle in the class without the injury.
22. Pittsburgh
Bud Dupree, DE, Kentucky: As the Steelers transition their defense from old to young, they grab one of the best edge rushers in the draft.
23. Detroit (traded to Denver)
Shane Ray, DE, Missouri: The Broncos clearly aren’t concerned about Ray’s potential foot injury or his recent marijuana citation after trading up to ensure they got their guy.
24. Arizona
D.J. Humphries, OT, Florida: The Cardinals take the final top tackle available in Humphries, meaning there won’t be a homecoming for the Charlotte native.
25. Carolina
Shaq Thompson, OLB, Washington: Thompson could be the Panthers’ outside linebacker and help them match up better against bigger receivers and tight ends. Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will love sending him on blitzes.
26. Baltimore
Breshad Perriman, WR, Central Florida: With Torrey Smith gone, the Ravens filled a need at receiver with Perriman. He’s raw, but he has a great route runner in Steve Smith to learn from.
27. Dallas
Byron Jones, CB, UConn: Jones is one of the most athletic players in the draft. Put him on the other side of Orlando Scandrick and watch them work.
28. Denver (traded to Detroit)
Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke: Tomlinson is a great run blocker who’s as smart as they come in the draft. The Lions will need him against stout NFC North defensive linemen.
29. Indianapolis
Phillip Dorsett, WR, Miami: Andrew Luck gets yet another speedy receiver to throw to, but that doesn’t solve the Colts’ problems along their defensive line.
30. Green Bay
Damarious Randall, FS, Arizona State: The Packers did enough in free agency to keep their offense strong, so they went defense to shore up any shortcomings.
31. New Orleans (from Seattle)
Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson: The Anson County product goes to a team in need of an inside linebacker after the Saints fully vetted Miami ILB Denzel Perryman.
32. New England
Malcolm Brown, DT, Texas: After letting Vince Wilfork walk this offseason, the Patriots find his replacement in one of the best tackles in the draft.
