Carolina Panthers claim DE LaVar Edwards off waivers, release DE Wes Horton
The Panthers claimed defensive end LaVar Edwards off waivers Sunday and released defensive end Wes Horton.
Edwards, a fourth-year pro, spent training camp with the Bills and was cut by Buffalo on Saturday. He has also spent time with the Titans, Raiders, Cowboys and Bears.
In 12 career games, Edwards, 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, has yet to record a sack. He had 10 1/2 sacks in his career at Louisiana State before Tennessee picked him in the fifth round of the 2013 draft.
“We think he’s an explosive guy. There’s some really good film on him from Buffalo,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “We have an opportunity to bring a guy in who’s a little different than what we have as far as some of the other ends are concerned.”
Horton made the final squad Saturday, only to be cut Sunday morning. He thanked Rivera and general manager Dave Gettleman in a tweet later in the afternoon.
