‘Just as special and maybe even better’: Tyber Creek Pub to reopen in new location

One of the oldest bars in Charlotte is closing its doors soon, but it won’t be long before it reopens in a new space.

After nearly 25 years in business, Tyber Creek Pub is closing down next week due to new development in South End. In a few months, the beloved neighborhood spot will be moving to a new building not too far from its original home.

As first announced by Axios Charlotte, the pub owners are taking over the property at 1501 S. Mint Street — formerly home to 1501 South Mint bar, which closed in January.

“We’ve been in South End for 25 years in May, and the fact that we have the ability to stay in South End and have a very, very short pause, and the style of the building — the red brick and the history — it just speaks to a very close cousin to the original Tyber Creek,” co-owner Tommy Timmins told CharlotteFive.

The property currently home to Tyber will soon be redeveloped for a high-rise apartment tower, so the owners originally planned to reopen in the new space, CharlotteFive previously reported.

But their plans for reopening changed after growing a team of staff members who owners didn’t want to separate.

“We had all of these great people and this team that we didn’t want to break up or lose,” co-owner Tommy Timmins explained. “So we started actively looking at some options to either lease or buy some new property to start a new concept or potentially what now became a new home for Tyber Creek.”

So once they toured the new location, the Tyber team thought it’d be a perfect fit to carry on the legacy of the pub — only about a mile away from its longtime building.

“We looked at other neighborhoods, as well, just to get a good idea if something really spoke to us, and the fact that it’s still in South End and Gold District, and it’s even closer to the [Bank of America] stadium were all big pluses for sure,” Timmins said.

Tyber’s future home has multiple buildings on the property — which will eventually all be utilized after each is opened in different phases.

“That layout and the flexibility of the plot gives the ability to create space that will encompass everything that Tyber Creek is and has been, and then also plan for what Tyber Creek will become in the future,” co-owner Maynard Goble told CharlotteFive. “The new space will … give this the flexibility to create something just as special and maybe even better.”

Right now, an official opening date has not been set, but the owners hope the bar will reopen by late spring or early summer.

“It’s been overwhelming … the support that we’ve received in the last three years since this process has been announced, and especially in the last few months … from the neighborhood, our friends, family and the community at large … It’s really been moving,” Goble said. “That in itself speaks to why we have this sense of urgency to kind of get something going, get back open.”

The End of an era

The team will be saying goodbye to Tyber Creek’s original location with one final St. Patrick’s Day celebration before closing down on Monday, March 18.

“We can’t wait for what’s in store for us this next chapter, and we can’t wait to still happily serve South End. Your favorite bartenders will still remain a family, so as Maynard said, ‘We’ll be right at home again.’ And so will you!,” the team said in a social media post. “All sales for the day will go to our staff as we prepare for what’s ahead. Cheers to 25 years!”
