Shop, work and relax: 5 new businesses are coming to Camp North End’s Kinship West
Of course, it wouldn’t be on brand if Camp North End’s first multifamily development hadn’t considered a way to support Charlotte’s small businesses owners — both at home and at work.
We have a new retail drop at the North Charlotte neighborhood: Five creators will open storefronts out of live-work units at Camp North End’s new multifamily development, Kinship West.
These ground-floor spaces are great news for those who dream of a short work commute or, as a consumer: A walkable neighborhood with everything you need — now including a manicure, a hat, a haircut, clothes or even a new tattoo.
Here’s what’s coming later this year at Camp North End:
Cell Therapy
Original Camp North End creatives Davita and Dion Galloway, siblings and founders of Dupp & Swat, are behind the new salon and barbershop called Cell Therapy.
The space will combine art and businesses, just like Dupp & Swat’s other brands, and will include the siblings’ signature focus on Black creatives.
- Multiple stations will be set up for haircuts, hairstyling and braids.
- Facials, makeup, brow waxing and nail services will also be offered.
- A vending machine (how fun!) will offer lashes, press-ons, beard oil, brushes and more.
Expect a space full of plants, greenery — and of course, art, talent and culture with a focus on community.
Deco Beauty Club
Nail artist Alexandra Cuadros, who previously worked in NoDa, is opening Deco Beauty Club. The private studio will feature intricate, hand-painted nail art and Russian-style manicures with high-quality builder gels.
Minimalist is out, here: Expect fun, bright maximalist patterns and bright colors in Deco’s live/work space. And expect the same on your hands: Recent nail art featured by the brand includes a nod to Latino culture, some dainty black flowers and cherries, palm trees and sushi themes.
The truly customized experience will be available by appointment only.
Fitteds
Charlotte-based custom hat retailer Fitteds CLT moved from McNinch Street in Uptown to Camp North End in 2023, and now owner Giovanni Brown is on the move again. This time, it’ll just be from Camp’s Keswick Platform to the live-work unit at Kinship.
Brown is excited for this move that will allow him to be both a shop owner and a resident, he said in a statement. At the hat shop, you will find:
- Custom one-off New Era and Mitchell & Ness hats.
- Officially licensed MLB, MBA and NFL products.
- Events, including pop-ups and collaborations.
Look for stylish colors and side patches — with designs often inspired from regional and historical sporting events.
House of Akasi
Courtnye Jackson’s boutique House of Akasi, which opened as an online shop in 2020, will showcase travel destination-inspired clothes and accessories. Visit before your next tropical vacation or even to stoke the flame of your wanderlust.
The boutique will also feature:
Candles, home goods, pet items and health-conscious spa care.
- Travel necessities and artisan pieces.
- Workshops and candle-making classes.
- Celebrations for Galentine’s Day, spa days and other events.
The Zen Cave
Tattoo artist Tia Wilson will open The Zen Cave, where you can both get a tattoo and add to your crystal collection. Sage and other meditative elements will also be for sale at the shop, which will have booths for three permanent artists and a rotating guest artist.
Does Wilson look familiar? You may recognize her from her post as operations manager of the Canteen at Camp North End in its Boileryard District. In fact, she got her start as a tattoo artist after spending time with other creatives at Camp North End.
She specializes in botanical and ornamental tattoos.
About the live/work spaces
The Kinship West live/work rentals for these shops will feature a dedicated business entrance from the main street. A private residential entrance to the living quarters will be within the building’s interior.
There are seven live/work units in total, ranging from 711- 1,084 square feet. Two are still available.
Camp North End updates
If if feels like your favorite adaptive-reuse space has been making lots of headlines lately, that’s because it has. Here are some recent updates to catch you up:
Noche Bruta’s owner Hector Gonzales-Mora told CharlotteFive just this week that he would be leaving Hex Coffee, Kitchen and Natural Wines. Hex will continue to serve its Japanese-Hawaiian-Southern American flavors under new head chef Michaela Moehring, instead of hosting a dual restaurant like it has with Noche Bruta.
Gravity Sourdough Pizza Co. opened in December, after its owners Alex Osterhoudt and Amanda Wagner hosted several outdoor movie screenings at Camp North End with their company, Aurora Star Lit Cinema.
Eggroll Company opened in the Keswick District’s food stalls in November. It features half-pound, deep-fried egg rolls served hot, with both sweet and savory options. In fact, the brand was crowned the People’s Choice Champion at the 2024 Dessert Wars competition in Charlotte in September.
After warning of waning sales in September, Wentworth & Fenn left Camp at the end of 2024.
Blasian Asian Way, a Korean barbecue fusion spot, took over former Saru Ramen’s spot at Camp North End in September.
Bleu Barn closed its food stall in August, stating: “This past year has been really hard on small businesses, and we aren’t the exception.”
- Popbar exited Camp North End in August before closing its NoDa location in December.
- Leah & Louise left Camp North End in April, with plans to reopen elsewhere.
