The 5 best things I’ve eaten at Milkbread (so far).

Besties, I have a confession. I can’t quit Milkbread.

In the first three days the Plaza Midwood location was open last week, I ordered it twice.

Of course, we’ve all seen the iconic chocolate covered milk bread doughnuts that the Davidson-based cafe is known for. I knew all about “how to milkbread,” thanks to Ebony’s coverage of the original location.

And I knew that anything created by James Beard-nominated chef Joe Kindred and his wife, Katy, who also own Kindred and Hello, Sailor, would be tasty.

But I hadn’t actually tried it for myself yet — until the Charlotte location finally opened in the iconic Dairy Queen Plaza Midwood location.

My first order was good — and my second order was even better.

Here are the 5 best things I’ve tried (so far!)*:

*I’m a vegetarian, so there are no menu items with meat on my list. I’m sure they are delicious too, though!

(1) Whole Bowl

Cauliflower rice, whipped tahini, jammy egg*, red onion, pepper, nut crunch $15

I added: Hot-Dipped Plant-Based Nuggets: + $5

My thoughts: I’m one of those people who has eaten so much Yafo I sometimes need a break. And this is a fantastic way to take that break: It reminds me of a Yafo bowl, but with a different flavor.

(2) Crispy Cauliflower

Cauliflower dipped in oat milk and bread with vegan house breading: $6

The first time I forgot, but the second time I added: Hot dipped: +$1

My thoughts: It’s rare to find vegan breaded foods in a restaurant that’s not exclusively vegan, so this was a pleasant surprise! These taste so good, they fill the gap that Eight+Sand left when it stopped serving its Buffalo cauliflower. I tried these both hot dipped and not, and both were delicious — though I’m a spicy girl at heart, so from now on it’s hot-dipped all the way.

(3) Grandfather’s Pickles

Housemade pickles in apple cider vinegar with white onion and Calabrian chile: $4

My thoughts: Simple, yet delicious. Throw a few in the mix with your order of hot-dipped crispy cauliflower and thank me later.

(4) Original Glaze Donut

Original apple cider glazed milkbread donut: $2

My thoughts: I didn’t expect to love this one. I usually find apple cider desserts just OK, and I typically go for chocolate. Glad I gave this a shot — it might be my favorite thing on the menu so far!

(5) Milk Chocolate Donut

Original apple cider glazed donut + dipped in milk chocolate: $2.50

My thoughts: I need to give this one another shot. It was good, but the apple cider glazed doughnut I tried later in the week was the shocking star of the show for me. To be safe, just order both!

Note: I snagged this doughnut on opening day, but it was removed from the menu later in the week. I’ll hazard a guess this is a lesson in patience as we wait for the new store to adjust its quantity to suit the long lines. For now, try a pumpkin spice milkbread donut?

What’s next?

Have you visited Milkbread yet? Send me an email and let me know which menu items are your favorites. In the meantime, here’s what I’ll probably try next:

  • Fresh-made buttered biscuit: I’ll probably upgrade this one with pimento cheese.

  • Green Goddess Cobb: It comes with little gem lettuce, smoked ham, onion, bacon, jammy egg*, bleu cheese, green goddess dressing (gf). I’ll sub out the meat for something else (maybe avocado?)

  • “BFC” (Big freakin’ cookie): Chocolate chipped and sea salted cookie.
