The long-anticipated opening of Suffolk Punch Brewing’s third location is back on track after construction delays and more than a year of getting town of Huntersville permit approvals, Seth Stidham, co-owner and chief operating officer of the brewery said Wednesday.

The two-level building in Birkdale Village near Lake Norman is up, and “Coming Soon” signs ring the construction site in the longtime mixed-use community off Interstate 77 exit 25 in Huntersville.

The brewery doesn’t have an opening date, but will welcome diners this year, Stidham told The Charlotte Observer.

The project “is over halfway complete,” with the louvered patio still to be installed, he said.

In May 2023, Suffolk Punch had just opened a second location, in SouthPark, when the Charlotte brewery announced plans for the Birkdale Village site. The brewery anticipated opening in early 2024, CharlotteFive reported at the time.

Then it encountered the permitting and construction delays, Stidham said Wednesday. “That was a big piece of it,” he said about the permits.

Suffolk Punch will be in a standalone building in The Grove across from the former Brixx space, former Birkdale Village owner North American Properties and Nuveen Real Estate said in 2023.

The taproom will feature a rooftop with a partially covered bar and seating overlooking The Plaza, plus a full-service bar downstairs with an all-seasons patio, CharlotteFive previously reported. The space will hold about 230 people, indoors and outdoors.

Executive chef Michael Rayfield will debut a chef-driven menu for the Lake Norman location that will rotate seasonally and will highlight local ingredients. At the bar, you’ll find Suffolk Punch’s craft beer, created under the direction of head brewer Brad Maas, along with seltzer, ciders, hard kombuchas, cocktails and natural wines.

“The energy, amazing outdoor experiences, and community focus that Birkdale provides overlaps with what we provide guests at Suffolk Punch,” Stidham said.. “We’re absolutely stoked to join the stellar lineup at Birkdale and to serve all of our friends in the Lake Norman area.”
