“We’re just excited to be back,” co-owner Maynard Goble told CharlotteFive. “Hopefully it’s a little bit of what people have missed from Tyber, and a lot of what people find familiar with Tyber.”
Read on for even more details that Goble and co-owner Tommy Timmins shared last week with CharlotteFive.
What to know about Tyber Creek
Only one building at Tyber Creek’s new space is opening today: the one closest to the corner, with heavy foot traffic from nearby Bank of America Stadium.
Plenty of concert-goers and sports fans have been keeping their eyes on Tyber’s progress, waiting to see when they could stop in.
“Especially while we’ve been doing the patio and the exterior a lot the last couple months, the support of people walking by, kind of waving in or trying to peek over the fence, and wishing us well has been pretty incredible,” Timmins said.
Inside the 1,900-square foot space, you’ll find a warm, cozy pub feel with plenty of details stoking memories of the old Tyber space, including decor, pictures and mirrors.
“Also to piggyback on that is the staff,” Goble said. “We’re lucky that we were able to maintain a majority of our staff from the last location ... and really that goes a long way to preserve the feel and the atmosphere, as well.”
Since Tyber Creek shut down its previous location last March to make way for new development in South End, its staff fanned out to sister establishments — The Workman’s Friend, Connolly’s On Fifth, Prohibition, The Daily Tavern.
Now, they’re back to work at the bar and in the kitchen, which will serve simple fare including salads, flatbreads and sandwiches.
Outside, a food truck will serve burgers, wings and Irish pub fare such as fish and chips and spice bags — a popular Irish takeout dish with french fries, fried chicken, onions and peppers, all tossed together with a spice blend similar to Chinese Five Spice.
“It almost has a cult-like following in Ireland right now,” Goble said of the dish.
The expansive 5,000-square-foot patio includes umbrellas for shade and patio lights, with plenty of greenery to welcome guests. There will be cornhole boards for entertainment, along with a place for dogs to gather with their owners.
“As we’ve done soft openings, we’ve invited friends, family and people we’ve worked with — and alongside of — for a long time, as well as some of the original customers from the original location. Some we’ve seen at the other locations, but some we haven’t seen in a year. So it’s been very, very cool and emotional to reconnect with everybody, and it’s wonderful that they’ve been as excited as we have for us to reopen,” Timmins said.
What’s coming up next at Tyber Creek
By fall, the team — which includes co-owner Kevin Devin — hopes to open the second building, which will house a piece of the pub’s history: the downstairs bar from the previous location. A covered structure will connect the two phases of the project.
Phase three of the project will be an event space for weddings and large parties that will likely open this winter.
“To see the look on their face when they walk in the front door really tells us everything — we’re definitely happy with with the way this has turned out. And it’s really inspiring to see the eyes light up and the smiles, and that makes us feel good that we’re doing things right,” Goble said.
