Carolina-born burrito joint plans first Charlotte-area restaurant. Here’s where

The Charlotte-area dining scene is growing again, and this time it’s gaining a burrito spot.

A Burrito Shak is slated to go up at 4941 Dogwood Blvd in Kannapolis, according to the restaurant’s website and a recent building plan review filed with Cabarrus County.

The eatery, known for its Baja-style burritos, bowls and tacos, is seeking to build a new outpost — its first in the Charlotte area. The project would include a paint job, new interior finishes, plumbing and electrical work, among other updates, filings show.

A close-up shot features a hand holding a large, foil-wrapped burrito filled with rice, black beans, lettuce, and guacamole. To the left, an open-faced taco topped with seasoned meat, fresh cilantro, and crumbled cheese sits on branded wax paper alongside a pile of tortilla chips. The wooden table and warm lighting create a rustic, inviting atmosphere for a “Burrito Shak” meal.

A target opening date wasn’t immediately available. CharlotteFive reached out to Burrito Shak for more information and was awaiting a response.

The North Carolina-based chain has more than a dozen locations across the state, including spots in Cary, Greensboro and Hampstead. Burrito Shak has an Arizona restaurant, too, and plans to open a location in Florida.

Locals in Kannapolis can look forward to locally-sourced “fresh-mex” dishes, the restaurant’s website says. Think: house-made salsas, corn tortillas and sides of chips and guac.

Quesadillas, nachos and salads are also on the menu and can be customized to your liking. Protein options include spiced chicken, pulled pork, ground beef, carne asada, Atlantic cod and seasoned tofu.

This is a developing story and will be updated. Desiree Mathurin contributed reporting.

The exterior of a “Burrito Shak” restaurant displays a large, stylized teal and white sign mounted on a cream-colored wall. Below the brand name, a smaller black bar features the words “QUICK. CRAFTED. COASTAL.” in clean white capital letters. Three black gooseneck lamps hang above the sign, illuminating the storefront located in a modern shopping center.
