Happy Friday, Charlotte! It’s Tanasia, and I’m back with your weekly recap of restaurant closings in Charlotte.

If you’re a lover of crab cakes like me, you’ll be sad to hear a takeout seafood spot has officially closed for business. An uptown wine bar has also shut its doors as it transforms into an intimate eatery serving elevated pasta dinners (yes, pillowy gnocchi is on the menu).

Here’s what you may have missed this week:

33rd & Main

33rd & Main is done slinging its famous stuffed seafood egg rolls.

The popular food truck closed for business in mid-March, but only recently shared the news in a farewell message posted on Instagram. Management cited rising costs and industry shifts for the difficult decision.

A large, spherical crab cake packed with colossal lumps of white crab meat and flecks of fresh green herbs sits on white parchment paper. The top is golden-brown and toasted, showcasing the dense, premium texture of the seafood.

“We’ve made the decision to close rather than compromise what made 33rd & Main what it is,” the owners wrote. “This space holds years of community, culture, and connection — and that doesn’t disappear.”

The menu included seafood-forward dishes like fried jumbo shrimp, crab cakes and “colossal” shrimp tacos.

The owners told me they’re considering starting over in a new city, but didn’t say where. I’ll keep y’all posted.

Cicchetti

The Italian-inspired restaurant and wine bar closed Wednesday, May 6 after seven years in uptown Charlotte, making way for a new concept from veteran restaurateurs Pierre Bader and Briana Cohen.

A sister space to Aria Tuscan Grill, Cicchetti offered small plates alongside a curated list of Italian-forward wines from around the world. Classic cocktails and beer were on the menu, too.

Now, the eatery is rebranding. Italo, a pasta house and wine bar, will take over the space at the corner of East Trade and North College Streets. Expect fresh pasta, bruschetta, handmade focaccia and other Italian classics.

A high-angle view shows an assortment of Italian appetizers spread across a white marble table. The spread includes a whole round focaccia, a plate of prosciutto and mozzarella, fried calamari with a grilled lemon, and a fresh green salad with shaved parmesan. A bottle of Peroni beer and a glass of red wine sit among the dishes, creating an inviting lunch scene.

The expansive wine list — which I hope includes a crisp sauvignon blanc or sweet Riesling — will feature pours that “celebrate classic Italian regions,” according to Italo’s website. There will also be classic cocktails and a few desserts.

“The idea was to create ... something that feels both classic and new,” Bader said in a news release announcing the new concept. “We’re excited to introduce a dining experience that’s rooted in tradition with timeless dishes but offers a new perspective for the neighborhood.”
