All-day brunch spot quietly closes in Dilworth after 15 years. Here’s why

A beloved Charlotte-area breakfast chain has closed for good in Dilworth.

Famous Toastery, known for its scratch-made breakfast and lunch offerings, is leaving The Courtyard strip mall after 15 years, the Charlotte Business Journal first reported.

The eatery served it last customers on Sunday, May 24.

A rectangular white sign reading “FAMOUS TOASTERY” in maroon capital letters is mounted on a red brick building facade. A simple illustration of a slice of toasted bread sits between the two words. Gooseneck light fixtures extend from the roofline above the sign, which is positioned over an entryway.

The Dilworth restaurant was still listed on Famous Toastery’s website as of Friday, May 29, but a Google listing showed it as “permanently closed.” CharlotteFive reached out to the chain’s corporate office for more information and was awaiting a response.

In a farewell message shared on Instagram, management thanked the Dilworth community for its years of support without mentioning the reason for the closure.

“Our number one goal is always to genuinely care about the people who walk through our doors, and the people who choose to call themselves Famous Toastery teammates,” they said.

Robert Maynard, owner and co-founder of the all-day breakfast chain, told the Charlotte Business Journal his decision not to renew the restaurant’s lease at The Courtyard came after analyzing how its other locations were doing.

“We’re seeing a shift and having a lot of success outside of the main Charlotte core,” Maynard told the news outlet. “I don’t look at this as a negative thing. We just decided it was time to move on.”

So far, it’s not clear will take over the sprawling 4,500 square-foot space.

A white paper sign taped to the glass door of a restaurant, announcing its closure. The sign, titled “Our last day of service was Wednesday September 10th,” thanks the community for 11 years of support and directs patrons to other locations.

The closure comes eight months after Famous Toasty also shuttered its restaurant in Tega Cay, South Carolina, citing a “reset” of its core market area that includes North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

“We’re expanding nationally right now,” Lorna Martinez, vice president of marketing for the brand, told CharlotteFive at the time, noting its plans to add locations in Texas and Arizona.

“So we’re just making sure we know what makes sense for us” as a brand.

Breakfast lovers, don’t fret. Famous Toastery still has plenty of Charlotte-area restaurants to grab a bite, including spots in Ballantyne, uptown, University City, Concord, Belmont, Davidson, Huntersville and Indian Land, South Carolina.
