Japanese grill and sushi bar quietly closes in University City

Kabuto Japanese Steakhouse has gone kaput in University City.

The Charlotte restaurant at 1001 E W.T. Harris Boulevard was listed as “permanently closed” as of Monday, June 29, according to Google.

It’s not clear when the eatery officially shut its doors or why. Kabuto’s other area locations, including spots in Lake Norman, South Charlotte and the Tyvola Road area, remain open.

This is a daytime, outdoor shot of the exterior storefront for Kabuto Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar, located in a light beige strip mall building. A concrete walkway leads up to the restaurant’s glass entrance doors, flanked by landscaped garden beds filled with green and purple shrubs and small colorful flowers. To the right, an asphalt parking lot contains several parked cars, with a dense line of green trees filling the background under an overcast sky.

The Japanese grill is known for serving hibachi, sushi, sashimi and other Asian-inspired offerings. Think: fried rice, garlic noodles, shrimp tempura and teriyaki chicken wings.

The University City restaurant offered half-price sushi on Wednesdays and Thursdays, plus a full bar menu featuring beer, cocktails and liquor, according to its website.

A manager for the Tyvola Road restaurant told CharlotteFive he was “not aware of the specific reasons” that led the University City location to close, noting that each Kabuto’s is independently owned and managed.

CharlotteFive reached out to Kabuto Japanese Steakhouse for more information Monday and was awaiting a response.
