A Charlotte pizzeria has a fun treat for you New Haven style pizza fans
If you’ve ever made a New Haven pizza pilgrimage (yes, it’s a thing), you’ve probably tried a Foxon Park soda with your thin-crusted New Haven apizza (pronounced “ah-beetz”). Foxon Park is a bit of a Connecticut icon. It’s been making beverages for more than 100 years, and fans say it’s an important part of the full apizza experience.
Now, you can try that vibe for yourself in the Charlotte area. Siano’s Pizza & Pasta, a Waxhaw pizzeria that landed at No. 7 in our recent C5 pizza rankings, began carrying Foxon Park late last month. Owner Frank Siano says he has 12 Foxon Park flavors available, including the popular Root Beer and White Birch, which has a subtle wintergreen flavor. (Pro tip: the cream soda is smooth and superb.) A 12 oz. bottle is $3.
“The reason we decided to buy a pallet and bring them in straight from the manufacturer is because every popular pizzeria in New Haven like Sally and Pepe’s are known to carry them, so it ties to our style of pizza,” Siano says.
That style is “New York New Haven,” says Siano, whose pizzas are exactly that — a hybrid. As we said in our rankings: “That crust is cooked crispy and is a bit of a tweener — thinner than NY style but not quite New Haven.” It’s an excellent crust and terrific pizza, and the addition of Foxon Park makes it even more worth the drive.
