Charlotte Five's Readers' Choice

Your choices for top barbecue, hot dogs and bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches in Charlotte

Readers' Choice Winners

CharlotteFive's crowned your favorites in the local food scene in 2022. As the year comes to a close, we take a look back at the food-and-drink spots you voted the best for coffee, doughnuts, chicken wings, burgers and more.

For some of CharlotteFive’s 2022 Readers’ Choice selections, we simply couldn’t narrow it down to a single winner. Not yet, at least. Instead, we compiled a list of some of the very best that you, our readers, say we can find in the Charlotte area.

Best Barbecue

The South has perfected the art of making barbecue. From the beef brisket in Texas to the pulled pork in North Carolina, eating barbecue can be nearly an out-of-body experience. We asked you to tell us your favorite barbecue spots in and around the Charlotte area. You provided so many restaurants that had our mouths watering.

Our list is 34 BBQ places strong, and includes favorites like Midwood Smokehouse, Sweet Lew’s, Mac’s Speed Shop, Noble Smoke and more.

Best Hot Dogs

Maybe you don’t think of Charlotte as a hot dog city. You would be wrong.

We’ve got small hot dog carts sprinkled throughout the city. We’ve got grocery stores — the Costco hot dog is apparently a whole thing. And we’ve got cafes with walk-up windows and restaurants with full table service.

We rounded up 37 of the best places to find a tasty hot dog, including Green’s Lunch, The Good Wurst Company and more.

Best Bacon, Egg and Cheese Sandwich

In our sometimes contentious world, the one thing we probably can all agree upon is the unmatched beauty of the sacred bacon, egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast. Restaurateurs in North Carolina can make a BEC just as well as the bodega and deli masters anywhere else can, and we asked for your help in finding the best bacon, egg and cheese in all of Charlotte.

We narrowed it down to your Top 10, and for this one, we even tallied votes to declare your selection for the top place: Poppy’s Bagels & More.
