Bicyclist hit by driver Monday, left to die in east Charlotte street, CMPD says

A search is underway for a suspected hit-and-run driver who killed a bicyclist in east Charlotte late Monday, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Investigators had not released the name of the cyclist early Tuesday.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. Monday when police were called about “an unresponsive bicyclist” in 8300 block of Harrisburg Road near the Harrisburg Soccer Sports complex, according to a press release.

“Officers arrived and located a male and a damaged bicycle on the road,” the release said. “The reporting person was a motorist that discovered the male as they were driving by but did not see the crash.”

Medic ambulance and the Charlotte Fire Department pronounced the bicyclist dead at the scene, the press release said.

Investigators believe the cyclist was traveling northeast on Harrisburg Road when he was struck from behind by the vehicle. The driver “failed to stop,” police said in the release.

“Vehicle debris collected at the scene determined the unknown suspect vehicle is a white 2005-2008 Toyota Corolla,” according to the press release.

“The vehicle will have damage to the front right including a broken headlight and will be missing the passenger side front bumper cover. The vehicle may have damage to the hood and windshield.”

To provide tips, the public can call CMPD 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600, the release said.
