160+ medical employees laid off as coronavirus hammers Charlotte doctor’s offices

Holston Medical Group has laid off more than 160 employees at eight North Carolina medical offices after 35 doctors announced plans to resign from the practice.

The changes are due in part to a drop in business from the coronavirus outbreak in the state.

The 35 physicians resigned from Holston offices earlier this year, but were scheduled to continue working at Holston Medical Group until September. The organization originally dismissed 21 of the doctors early in mid-April, but has now dismissed all 35 doctors, according to a statement posted on Holston’s website.

Now, Holston has closed 10 office locations, including its Charlotte offices, and laid off support staff in those locations. That includes 163 employees from North Carolina offices in Charlotte, Denver and Huntersville.

Two North Carolina offices remain open for patients, both in Mooresville, according to Holston Medical Group.

At least some of the 35 dismissed doctors were part of a group that joined Holston after leaving Novant Health last year.
