A year after bolting Novant, dozens of doctors leave Holston to join Atrium
Dozens of former Holston Medical Group physicians are joining Atrium Health, including 29 doctors who left Novant Health just last year.
The move to join Charlotte’s biggest hospital system comes after Holston dismissed 35 doctors who had plans to resign.
Now, 36 former Holston physicians will join Atrium in new practices called One Health Family Medicine and One Health OB/GYN, with locations in Lake Norman and north Charlotte, according to Atrium.
Atrium expects 17 more health care providers from Holston will join the system soon, including physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
The group of doctors leaving Novant for Tennessee-based Holston marked a growing local trend of doctors leaving big hospital systems for independent practice. The doctors were following in the footsteps of nearly 100 doctors who left Atrium in 2018 to form Tryon Medical Partners.
And late last year, a group of doctors left Gaston County’s CarMont Health to join Tryon Medical Partners.
Now, the former Holston physicians joining Atrium is a reversal of the latest local trend toward independent practice.
‘Difficult’ news
Atrium says the doctors will begin receiving patients with the hospital system “in the near future,” but didn’t give details.
The 35 doctors who gave their resignation notices were scheduled to leave Holston in September, according to the practice. But with a drop in business due to the coronavirus outbreak, Holston dismissed those doctors in mid-April, closed 10 locations and laid off 163 support staff.
Those Holston locations served roughly 70,000 patients, Atrium estimated in a statement Thursday.
Two North Carolina offices remain open for patients, both in Mooresville, according to Holston Medical Group.
“We know that at any time, especially now, this news is difficult to hear,” Holston Medical Group said in a statement on their website regarding the office closures and layoffs.
Holston patients can choose to remain with the practice, or transfer their medical records to another practice online. Patients with questions for Holston should call 877-464-1213 with concerns, according to the practice.
Any patients who want to transfer to Atrium Health can start the process online or call 704-468-8892 for help.
