Why Harris Teeter is closing an east Charlotte store while building three new ones

Harris Teeter is closing an east Charlotte store following a “strategic market review,” the Matthews-based grocery chain said Wednesday.

The Mintworth Commons store at 5706 Wyalong Drive will be closing by April 17, Harris Teeter confirmed. The pharmacy also will remain open until the store closes.

Customers are being informed through in-store signs and e-VIC communication. Customers are being directed to shop at nearby Harris Teeter stores at Mint Hill Pavilion, Matthews Township and Idlewild Market in Matthews.

The company began notifying store employees last week. Each Harris Teeter store has about 100 to 120 workers.

Affected employees can apply for transfers to other store locations and will be offered assistance during the closing process, Harris Teeter said.

Competition for a piece of the record-setting $10.4 billion grocery market in Charlotte is fierce with nearly 730 stores. Harris Teeter ranks second by marketshare behind retail giant Walmart. Other stores expanding in the region include Publix, Sprouts Farmers Market, Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s and Wegmans.

Harris Teeter expanding in hot Charlotte market

The Charlotte store closing comes on the heels of Harris Teeter’s expansion plan for three stores in Kannapolis and in South Carolina in Lake Wylie and Fort Mill.

Construction on the 61,000-square-foot store at Five Points in Lake Wylie will begin this winter. The store will include Starbucks and a wine and beer bar.

Construction on the 61,000-square-foot store in Fort Mill at Catawba Ridge Market is expected to begin this winter. The store will include a full-service wine and beer bar.

Construction on the 53,000-square-foot store in downtown Kannapolis will begin in the fall. The store, which will include a Starbucks, will anchor Millstone Village, a mixed-use development at North Main and North Loop.

Each location will feature fuel centers and pharmacies with drive-thrus.

Harris Teeter also is opening stores in Jacksonville, Florida, and Clemson, S.C.

Harris Teeter, a subsidiary of Kroger Co. based in Ohio, has over 260 stores across the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, Florida, and the District of Columbia.
