American Express expands to uptown Charlotte, plans to hire a few hundred people

American Express, the major credit card and global financial services corporation, is ready to call Charlotte home by the end of the year.

AmEx employees will take over several floors at Legacy Union 6Hundred at 600 S. Tryon St. late this year, according to a statement from the firm. Over the next few years, American Express will hire a few hundred people, the statement adds. And the hiring has already begun.

On AmEx’s website, about 13 jobs have been posted, mainly for senior positions. They are listed as hybrid roles for now.

The move is part of AmEx’s expansion strategy to meet the growing needs of its consumer base.

Charlotte’s talent pool was a major reason AmEx chose the city for its newest location, according to Denise Pickett, the president of enterprise shared services at American Express.

“When we look for new locations, we focus on places that offer access to highly skilled talent and where we can acquire real estate at a reasonable cost,” Pickett said in the statement. “We selected Charlotte as a place to expand our footprint because it’s a strong market for talent in financial services, risk, compliance and emerging financial technologies.”

It’s a sentiment that many companies share about the Queen City.

Global debt collector PRA Group announced its move to uptown’s One South this week because of the city’s growing employee base. And last year, the city saw a slew of overseas businesses pick Charlotte as an expansion city, including Germany-based Volkswagen’s Scout Motors and Daimler Truck North America.

About Legacy Union 6Hundred

Later this year, AmEx will join tenants, including law firm Robinson Bradshaw, at the newest building to open at the Legacy Union development.

The Charlotte Ledger first reported that AmEx intended to expand into Legacy Union.

The 24-story, 411,000-square-foot tower opened last year and is about 84% occupied. It sits on the former site of The Charlotte Observer.

In November, Highwoods Properties purchased the building for $230 million from developer Lincoln Property Co.

It’s the fourth property Highwoods has purchased at the redevelopment since 2019. That year, Highwoods bought the Bank of America tower.

It purchased SIX50 in 2022 and a 14-story parking garage at 720 S. Church St., which has over 3,000 parking spaces and including over 14,300 square feet of retail.

In total, Highwoods has spent $983 million on Legacy Union properties, according to Mecklenburg County records.
