Charlotte’s West End sees health options boost with new $2.2M CVS investment
Pharmacy giant CVS is investing $2.2 million to launch a wellness initiative in Charlotte’s Historic West End.
Through the CVS Health Foundation, the company is introducing its “Health Zone” via the Westside Wellness Collab — a program led by the Local Initiatives Support Corporation Charlotte, a non-profit community development financial institution.
This initiative aims to go beyond traditional medicine by providing healthy food options and support for chronic conditions directly to residents. These Health Zones are designed to “meet people where they are,” according to CVS.
Improving West End Charlotte
The investment targets a critical gap in city services. The United States Department of Agriculture has designated several West End neighborhoods as “low-income and low-access,” meaning many residents live more than half a mile from a full-service grocery store.
The region also faces a significant demographic shift.
Mecklenburg County’s 65+ population is projected to nearly double — climbing from roughly 138,000 in 2021 to over 262,000 by 2041. With CDC data showing that nearly half of U.S. adults live with high blood pressure, the Westside Wellness Collab aims to provide a local defense against these rising health challenges.
What will the CVS money be used for?
The $2.2 million will be distributed through LISC Charlotte to bolster the efforts of several local organizations, including Care Ring, the Charlotte Community Services Association, and Deep Roots Community Planning Solutions.
The funding will be used to support:
- Mobile Clinics — Offering screenings, preventive care, and consistent follow-up support.
- Food Distribution — Combatting food insecurity through direct distribution and nutritional education.
- Behavioral Health — Providing workshops and assistance for social and behavioral needs.
A centralized hub for these community services will be established at the Charlotte CSA at First Baptist Church West, 1801 Oaklawn Ave. It began Wednesday with produce distribution, prepared meals and the mobile clinic on site.
More on CVS Footprint in Charlotte and North Carolina
This local investment is part of a broader statewide push by CVS Health.
The company operates more than 360 locations in North Carolina, employing over 10,000 people.
Beyond medical care, CVS has been active in the Charlotte housing market. The company recently celebrated the grand opening of Trella Uptown, a mixed-income community in the city’s business district. CVS invested more than $15 million in that project.
To date, CVS has committed $56 million to affordable housing across North Carolina, helping to preserve or renovate more than 2,500 units.
Last year, the company’s Project Health initiative also provided more than 6,000 free health screenings to North Carolinians, further cementing its role in the state’s public health infrastructure.
