The Charlotte Observer visited nine grocery stores to check the cost of store-brand guacamole.

  • Whole Foods Market
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Target
  • Harris Teeter
  • The Fresh Market
  • Food Lion
  • Publix
  • Aldi
  • Walmart Supercenter

We collected the guacamoles on the morning of Wednesday, May 27. We recorded the regular prices for each item, but in-store deals and rewards accounts could change these prices for many shoppers once they’re at the register.

Several Charlotte Observer staff members did a blind taste test of the nine guacamoles. Known guacamole haters did not participate.

Each participant was given three votes: two for the top pick, one for the second-best pick.

The winning guacamole, from The Fresh Market, was also the most expensive.

Target took second place, and Harris Teeter took third.

Five of the guacamoles received no votes:

  • Walmart
  • Publix
  • Food Lion
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Whole Foods

If any participant truly disliked something, that was also noted. Trader Joe’s, Publix and Walmart, none of which received any votes, did receive the mark of hatred: a single pink sticky note.

The cheapest guacamole was from Aldi, and received two votes. The second cheapest, from Walmart, was nearly universally disliked. However, the third cheapest guacamole, from Target, was in the top three.
