Legion Brewing behind on loan, lease payments, lawsuit alleges
Charlotte’s Legion Brewing is facing another lawsuit, this time over questions about its finances.
A minority stakeholder in the brewery, which has three Charlotte locations, has accused the owners of failing to be financially transparent to its investors and “fail[ing] to make certain payment obligations, including loan and lease payments,” according to a lawsuit filed in Mecklenburg County Superior Court on Thursday.
The plaintiff, B&D Legion Holdings LLC, owns a just over 13% stake in the brewery. That gives it the legal right to inspect the business’s records — but Legion has failed to provide quarterly and annual statements since B&D became a member in 2020, the suit claims. The brewery only provided a few financial statements from last year after multiple demands, according to the suit.
A call to Legion Brewing’s Plaza Midwood location was referred to its South Park location, where a manager was not immediately available for comment. An email to the business seeking comment about the suit was not returned Thursday afternoon.
It’s the second lawsuit facing Legion Brewing in less than a year.
In December, former employee Joshua Denton sued the brewery, claiming management ignored years of warnings about OSHA safety violations, did not comply with ADA regulations and wrongfully terminated him. The former safety manager said he tried for nearly seven years to bring up safety concerns including falling metal rods, exposure to deafening noise in brewing areas with no protective gear, and improperly stored chemicals. Denton was told “that safety measures ‘that required money’ would have to wait,” he alleged in the lawsuit.
Denton was abruptly fired in January 2025 less than 24 hours after he again warned management of a metal hanger dangling above a work station, the lawsuit alleged.
That case was transferred to the Western District of North Carolina federal district court and settled last month, court records show.
Legion Brewing has locations in Plaza Midwood, South Park and off West Morehead Street.
