Asian Corner Mall plans from Charlotte developer include apartments and other changes

A local developer has been mostly mum about its plans for the prominent Asian Corner Mall in Eastway near NoDa. But city of Charlotte filings help reveal more about the future of the decades-old building off North Tryon Street.

Beauxwright’s planned development at the mall come as the longtime tenant International Supermarket is set to close by the end of the year, The Charlotte Observer reported this week. The market and building owners are planning to retire.

The permits describe an adaptive reuse of the existing mall building, with close to 40,000 square feet of office space and 31,000 square feet of retail across 9.3 acres. Listed as the “Sugar Creek Incubator,” Beauxwright’s plans also describe building two street networks with a connection to Sugar Creek Road.

Apartments also appear to be in the cards: Plans describe demolishing the expansive (and pot-hole filled) parking lot for a future apartment building. A permit filed for a Beauxwright-owned parcel along Sugar Creek Road also calls for apartments.

The permits do not list a total number of apartments. A timeline on construction is also not clear.

Attempts to reach a Beauxwright spokeswoman were not immediately successful Friday. The developer declined earlier this week to detail its plans for the mall property.

Popular supermarket closing

Beauxwright has bought up about 40% of the mall property, with its most recent purchase in September. The company spent $8.5 million for just shy of 10 acres, Mecklenburg County property records show.

The developer owns a parcel that includes part of the Asian Corner Mall, which dates back to at least the early to mid-2000s.

And even though International Supermarket, a staple of this part of Charlotte for about 20 years, will close by the end of the year,Asian grocery store New Century will remain open and remain a part of the developer’s project.

Popular banh mi shop Le’s Sandwiches & Cafe also will have a home at Beauxwright’s project, according to the developer. The shop will open in a new space next year.

About Asian Corner Mall

Asian Corner Mall, formerly known as Tryon Mall, came to house two of Charlotte’s largest Asian supermarkets: International Supermarket and New Century. They offered Asian ingredients from countries like Indonesia and the Philippines, and sold fish in big tanks.

There are a few other businesses at the mall, including a beauty salon.

Developers and others have show interest in the area surrounding the mall. The light rail’s Sugar Creek station is close by, along with a project under construction that’s expected to bring office, retail and apartments.
