A young bicyclist died at a hospital soon after he was hit by a driver who fled onto Interstate 85 with the bike still attached to a stolen car, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said Saturday.

Police charged a 19-year-old Charlotte man in the case after his mother called police to say he wanted to turn himself in, according to CMPD.

The youth was hit at about 5:40 p.m. Friday in the 3900 block of Glenwood Drive, CMPD Lt. Andy Harris said in a news release. That is off Tuckaseegee Road in west Charlotte. Because the victim is a juvenile, police said they are not releasing his name or age.

Medic took the victim to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center, where he died about a half hour later, police said.

After the suspect’s mom called police at 7:20 p.m., Rodney Lycurgus McCorkle Jr. was charged with felony hit and run, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a stolen vehicle, according to CMPD.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the CMPD major crash investigations unit at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
