Charlotte’s trees are disappearing. Environmentalists say Charlotte should require more protection of its tree canopy, both beautiful and useful, especially in this age of climate change.

Development, weak tree-saving policies and an aging canopy are some of the reasons why Charlotte has no hope of achieving its goal of growing a canopy that covers 50% of the city by 2050, scientists, environmentalists and city leaders say.

The city lost 7,669 acres of trees – or about three football fields per day – between 2012 and 2018, according to Charlotte’s most recent tree canopy measurement.

Most of the city’s tree loss has occurred on residential lands not protected by the city’s ordinances, the canopy measurement revealed.
