$26 million in work begins on I-277 in Charlotte. Here’s what to know about closures

Crews have begun closing lanes on Interstate 277 at night to improve bridges along a 1.3-mile stretch of the uptown Charlotte loop.

The closures began Monday night as part of a $26-million contract to improve bridges from Tenth Street to Interstate 77, according to a news release Monday by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Closures will resume on the outer loop from Monday night, April 18, through Friday morning, April 22, officials said.

Contractor American Civil Constructors West Coast LLC of California will work on the bridges on:

I-277/U.S. 74 over I-77.

East Twelfth Street over Tryon Street.

I-277/N.C. 16 over the Charlotte Area Transit Light Rail, North College Street, North Tryon Street, North Church Street, U.S. 29/N.C. 49 (Graham Street), N.C. Music Factory Boulevard and Johnson Street, including the CSX and Norfolk Southern railroad tracks.

Single- and double-lane closures on the I-277 inner loop will continue from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly through Thursday morning, according to NCDOT.

“The closures allow the contractor to safely complete investigative work prior to starting bridge rehabilitation work such as deck repairs, substructure improvements and painting existing structures,” NCDOT officials said in the release.

Also, between Tenth Street and Johnson Street on I-277, crews will replace all guardrails and fencing, pour hot asphalt and repair concrete pavement on the highway and ramps.
