Charlotte Mecklenburg Library announces temporary shutdown. Here’s when and why
Mecklenburg County’s public library system will shut down temporarily next month.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library branches and book drops will close for multiple days in April as the library migrates to an updated software system, according to an advisory on the library system’s website.
The transition will also limit other library services for much of the month.
The library system currently operates 22 locations across Mecklenburg County.
When will Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library branches close?
Customer impacts will begin April 1, according to the library’s advisory. New library card sign ups will be unavailable, and existing card holders won’t be able to place holds, submit an interlibrary loan request or suggest materials for the library to purchase.
Online event registration will shut down April 4, and card holders will temporarily lose access to their online and mobile app accounts April 11.
From April 13 onward, library branches won’t be able to process returns, and people will only be able to check out books already on hand at the branch they visit.
The transition will culminate in all branches and book drops closing April 18. Book drops will reopen April 21, and branches will follow on April 23.
All services will return to normal operations May 5.
What about mobile library?
MoLi, Charlotte’s mobile library, will shut down from April 17 until April 24, according to library spokesman Mario Lόpez.
What about digital services?
Library users can still access the system’s digital services, including eBook and streaming services Libby and Hoopla, during the shutdown.
Users can access digital services at digitalbranch.cmlibrary.org.
