CLT airport flight cancellations top 1,100 during winter storm. Here’s the latest

Winter Storm Fern continued to disrupt travel for thousands of passengers Sunday as sleet and ice blanketed the Charlotte area.

According to FlightAware, more than 1,100 flights at CLT had been cancelled and another 50 were delayed Sunday. CLT was also ranked No. 4 on FlightAware’s Misery Map, which ranks U.S. airports by the severity of delays and cancellations, giving travelers a snapshot of where disruptions are hitting hardest in real time.

The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning for the region Sunday, with forecasters predicting between a quarter-inch and three-quarters of an inch of ice on surfaces through Monday afternoon.

To prepare for the storm, the airport mobilized more than 40 specialized vehicles, pretreated parking areas with deicer and coordinated with American Airlines, which operates about 90% of CLT’s flights, The Charlotte Observer reported.

Forecasters say freezing rain and sleet will continue Sunday, turning to all freezing rain by midday, with highs near 30 and up to four-tenths of an inch of ice possible. Conditions will remain slick Sunday night, with freezing rain lingering into the evening and patchy fog developing as temperatures dip to around 29 degrees.
