Woman dies, 2 trapped after driver veers off a Lake Norman road, trooper says

A 57-year-old woman died after her husband veered off a road near Lake Norman on Friday and hit a concrete culvert, causing their car to overturn, according to the State Highway Patrol.

A 57-year-old woman died after her husband veered off a road near Lake Norman on Friday and hit a concrete culvert, causing their car to overturn and trapping everyone inside, according to the State Highway Patrol and public records.

Mary Miller, of Sherrills Ford, died in the crash on Mount Pleasant Road near Trailwood Drive, Trooper Jake Macchia said in a news release. She was in the backseat of the 2021 Dodge Charger and not wearing a seatbelt, Macchia said.

Her husband, Norman Miller, 65, of Sherrills Ford, was driving the car and was taken by EMS to Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory with minor injuries.

A front seat passenger, 34-year-old Joshua Freeman of Oregon, also was hospitalized with minor injuries, Macchia said.

The crash happened just before 3:30 p.m. No charges are expected, the trooper said.
