‘A life taken too soon’: Charlotte teen remembered as energetic and caring — a leader

Those who knew North Mecklenburg High School student John Daniel Morales describe him as “energetic” and a good leader.

“He just always thought about ‘How can I help those around me be better and how can we be a better team?’ ” Charles Robinson, founder of the anti-violence group One Time Inc., said about the 15-year-old.

Morales was found shot in the head at a park in the 8900 block of First Run Court near Harrisburg Road around 5:35 p.m. Sunday, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report.

He died of his injuries at a hospital, police said in a news release Friday.

Two 15-year-olds were arrested Thursday in connection with Morales’ killing, CMPD said. They are in custody at the Mecklenburg County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police have not released details about what led to the shooting.

Morales’ family could not immediately comment on his death when reached by The Charlotte Observer on Friday.

Coach: Morales a natural leader

Morales played football at North Meck, and he dreamed of playing in the NFL so that he could support his family, Robinson said.

When Morales was 8, he joined Team Trublue, a community nonprofit dedicated to ending violence, and played football for the group. Robinson, his coach, said Morales was gifted enough to play any position.

Morales also did well in school and was a natural leader, Robinson said.

During a volunteer trip to Atlanta with the group, Morales helped to feed 1,000 people, Robinson said. Morales also participated in conflict resolution seminars.

Morales’ former Blythe Elementary School teacher, in a Facebook post, remembered him as “one of the sweetest, (most energetic), caring students” she ever taught.

“For six years, he showed me what teaching was all about,” Terri Morris wrote. “Such a tragedy and a life taken too soon.”

Help for Morales’ family, friends

Grief counseling services were made available to North Meck students, principal Stephanie Hood told families in a letter this week.

“We understand this loss will bring up many emotions, concerns and questions,” Hood wrote.

A GoFundMe page to help Morales’ family with funeral expenses called the teenager “a kind hearted respectful young man.”

As of Friday evening, more than $16,000 had been raised.

“He still had so much life to give,” according to the fundraiser page.

There have been at least 39 homicides in Charlotte, according to CMPD data.

Anyone with information about Morales’ shooting can call 704-432-8477 (TIPS) and speak with a Homicide Unit detective. Information also can be left anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or charlottecrimestoppers.com.
