Two years after Shanquella Robinson’s mysterious death in Cabo, Mexico made national headlines, the lawyer representing her mother has filed a lawsuit on her behalf against her daughter’s six travel companions.

A press release on Monday said the lawsuit filed in Mecklenburg County Superior Court alleges multiple counts of wrongful death, battery, negligence, conspiracy and emotional distress. In addition to individuals, the suit is directed against the U.S. Department of State and the FBI, the press release said.

“This lawsuit is not just about seeking justice for Shanquella Robinson; it’s about holding accountable those who were entrusted with the duty to investigate, act, and protect the interests of U.S. citizens abroad,” said Sue-Ann Robinson, the attorney representing Sallamondra Robinson. There is no relation. “The heartbreaking details of Shanquella’s death and the subsequent mishandling by federal authorities only add to the family’s grief, and they deserve both full transparency and justice.”

The press release said the lawsuit is seeking compensatory and punitive damages “to address the profound emotional and financial toll this incident has caused.”

On October 28, 2022, Shanquella Robinson, a 25-year-old woman from Charlotte, arrived at a resort villa in Mexico with six travel companions. Just one day later, she was found dead.

Tuesday will mark the two-year anniversary of her suspicious death, and questions persist about what really happened to Robinson during the trip to Cabo San Lucas, and if any of her travel companions, known as “the Cabo Six,” will face charges.

Multiple attempts by The Charlotte Observer to reach Robinson’s parents, Sallamondra and Ben Robinson, as well as her sister Quilla Long, were unsuccessful.

In November 2023, Sue-Ann Robinson, who founded Frontline Law, said the family was planning to seek a wrongful death civil suit against their daughter’s travel mates.

“The Cabo Six” said Robinson died from alcohol poisoning. But Robinson’s family believed her death was violent. An autopsy report and death certificate, as well as a video of a woman beating on a naked Robinson, supported their assertion.

Authorities said Robinson died of a broken neck, and specifically named the cause of her death as “severe spinal cord injury and atlas luxation.”

The other woman in the video was later identified by hotel staff and investigators as Daejhanae Jackson. Mexican authorities issued an arrest warrant for a charge of femicide — similar to homicide — for Jackson.

“The family continues to call for the arrest and extradition of Daejhanae Jackson, who is wanted in Mexico for femicide,” Monday’s press release said.

The Observer has not been able to reach Jackson.

Robinson’s case went viral on social media. A subreddit devoted specifically to Robinson’s case, as well as multiple Facebook groups focused on her, have thousands of members.

In April 2023, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in North Carolina said it wouldn’t pursue criminal charges.

As of Monday, no one has been arrested or charged for Robinson’s death.

In a previous interview, Sallamondra Robinson said the family had seen the video of her being “brutally beaten.”

“She did no wrong to no one and it was just heartbreaking,” Sallamondra Robinson said. “Someone should have been arrested right after the video was released.”

The press release said Sue-Ann Robinson and Sallamondra Robinson will hold a press conference Tuesday morning at the Little Rock African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in uptown.
