A 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Iryna Zarutska, was fatally stabbed on Aug. 22 on the light rail line in Charlotte’s South End. 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown Jr., who has a reported history of mental health issues, is charged in the killing. Zarutska’s death has received national attention, with public comments from President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Charlotte officials.

A 23-year-old woman was fatally stabbed late Friday along the light rail line in Charlotte’s South End, and police said a suspect remained hospitalized on Saturday.
Just before 10 p.m., officers found Iryna Zarutska with knife wounds in the 1800 block of Camden Road, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release. MEDIC pronounced her dead, police said.
Police said the suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, but aren’t saying how they believe Brown was injured.
Brown will be arrested and charged when he’s released from the hospital, police said.
Another person was taken to the hospital due to an unrelated “medical event,” police said.
Police also aren’t saying if Zarutska knew the suspect or what they believe prompted the stabbing.
