CMS dismissing classes 3 hours early Thursday for weather. What about Friday?
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will let students out of classes three hours early Thursday and all after-school activities have been canceled for the day due to the potential for worsening weather.
Districts surrounding Charlotte are also dismissing early, including Union, Gaston and the Iredell-Statesville Schools.
“CMS will dismiss three hours early today due to the threat of severe weather and the potential of dangerous road conditions,” the district said in a Facebook post.
“All after-school activities, including athletics, ASEP, field trips and community use of schools are canceled.”
- Union County schools will dismiss students three hours early, and the district is canceling after-school activities, according to a Facebook statement.
- Gaston County Schools will dismiss students at 1 p.m. and all after-school activities are canceled Thursday.
- And the Iredell-Statesville Schools says it will follow “the I-SS Early Release schedule,” starting with letting elementary students out at 11 am.
Late Thursday, CMS said it would close all schools on Friday due to concerns about road conditions.
A winter weather advisory remains in place for Thursday and Thursday night.
There is a 90% chance of rain, sleet and snow from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and snow is likely after dark until 1 a.m. Friday, the National Weather Service says.
Snow is also likely (a 60% chance) from sunset until 1 a.m. Friday, the NWS says. No additional accumulation is expected, forecasters say.
However, temperatures will fall below freezing, with a low of 27 degrees, creating a possibility of ice on roads and bridges.
“Roads will initially be warm and wet, but with slippery conditions developing as temperatures fall through the day. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute,” according to the National Weather Service.
CMS closed schools earlier this month, after a severe storm on Feb. 6 left some schools without power the next day and road conditions were unsafe for school buses. The district used the President’s Day holiday as a makeup day for the earlier storm.
