Unloaded gun found inside a student’s backpack at Harding University High, CMS says

An unloaded gun was found inside a student’s backpack at Harding University High School on Tuesday morning, the second gun found on a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools campus this week.

It’s the 30th gun found on CMS campuses since the school year started in late August, district spokeswoman Cassie Fambro told The Charlotte Observer.

A Harding administrator found the weapon before it was taken through the security scanners, Principal Glenn Starnes II said in a message to school families.

The bookbag’s owner has been identified, Starnes said. Law enforcement arrived at the west Charlotte campus immediately to investigate, he said.

Students and staff are safe following what Starnes called an “isolated situation.”

This is the fourth gun found at Harding this school year, according to Observer data. West Charlotte High has the most guns found, with 10, the data show.

On Monday, staff at Coulwood STEM Academy found a gun, WSOC reported. Students were told to not bring backpacks onto the campus for the remainder of the school year, Principal Janet Moss said in a message to Coulwood families.

The last day of school for CMS is Wednesday.
