Classes will be canceled through Wednesday at UNC-Chapel Hill following a fatal shooting on campus Monday that left a professor dead.
The university issued an Alert Carolina message around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday saying the campus would remain under “Condition 3” through Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. “Condition 3” means the university is closed and only mandatory employees must report to work.
Non-mandatory employees should not report to work and will not be required to use personal leave time.
UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said at a press conference Tuesday that the university would resume normal operations Thursday at 12:01 a.m.
Guskiewicz said classes were canceled Wednesday “so that our community can continue the healing process and have access to the many resources” the university is providing.
Among other resources, the university has opened a hotline for concerned parents, loved ones and community members who have questions about Monday’s events. The number is 919-918-1999.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) staff will talk with students Wednesday on a walk-in basis at the Carolina Union Room 2420 and Student and Academic Services Building North, Room 1118, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
UNC Police Chief Brian James said police would increase their presence and visibility on campus “to provide reassurance to our campus.”
The university was also under Condition 3 Tuesday.
