Prank gone wrong: CMS student impaled after sitting on pencil

A student prank at Stoney Creek Elementary School with a pencil on a seat on March 17 went wrong when one of them ended up impaled, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police 911 audio.

One of the students “said that they were trying to play a prank on him, and they put a pencil on his seat, and when he went to sit down they held the pencil still so that when he sat down it went in,” the 911 caller said.

MEDIC responded to the school on Mallard Roost Road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a report was not filed for this incident.

The caller, who said the student injured was born in 2014, stepped out of the front office because of “yelling and screaming going on in there.” The student was in the health room in the front office. Parents were also in the office, the caller said.

“We don’t know how deep it is, but he says he feels the pencil in him,” the caller said. It’s unclear who the 911 caller is.

The caller said the student was awake and responding normally. The pencil was not removed while they waited for MEDIC. There was no serious bleeding, the caller said.

The caller said it wasn’t clear where the pencil impaled the student. The caller did not say how many students were involved in the prank.

Asked for more information about what happened, the media relations office at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools provided a message sent to families after the incident.

The message said parents and law enforcement were called to the school after the incident. But the message did not say what happened or if any students faced punishment .

Tom Miner, a school district spokesperson, declined to answer questions.

The Charlotte Observer reached out to the district again on Thursday asking for more information.
