A woman’s “luck was evaporating on the casino floor.”

Shrouded in disappointment, the Virginia woman called family and friends to say she found no luck, Maryland Lottery officials said in an Oct. 3 news release.

After she left the casino, though, the woman decided to try her luck once more.

She spent $20 on a $500,000 Crossword instant ticket at a Hanover gas station, lottery officials said.

The woman “found seven words in the first puzzle,” and, “at first, she thought her game won $1,000,” lottery officials said.

However, the woman wasn’t done scratching her ticket.

She scratched the multiplier box and found a 50X multiplier, lottery officials said.

“It clicked,” lottery officials said.

The woman told lottery officials she realized she had won $50,000.

Now, the woman was calling family and friends with good news, lottery officials said.

“What a change a few hours can make,” lottery officials said.

The woman, a 48-year federal government employee, said she plans to put a portion of her winnings toward charity donations and bills and will tuck away the rest in savings.

Hanover is about a 10-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.
