Whenever a Maryland mother buys lottery tickets, she checks with her son to see if he would like some, too.

And when her son picks up some tickets, he checks with her, Maryland Lottery officials said in an Oct. 4 news release.

“My son and I are sort of a lottery team,” the Woodlawn woman told lottery officials.

Recently, the woman’s son dropped off some instant tickets he picked up for her, and she tucked them away in purse.

The woman told lottery officials she had planned to play them that evening, but then there was a lull at work “as she and her restaurant co-workers awaited the lunch rush,” lottery officials said.

To keep busy, the woman fetched the lottery tickets from her purse and started scratching them.

She pulled out the Gold Rush 7s Tripler ticket from the pile, lottery officials said.

Upon seeing the ticket’s matching number won her a $50,000 prize, she was speechless, lottery officials said.

“I was thinking to myself, ‘I think I just won,’” the woman told lottery officials.

The woman, though, didn’t want to share the good news with others and “had to stifle her reaction until the shift was over,” lottery officials said.

“It was a tough thing to do,” the woman said. “I found it very hard to keep my mind on work while thinking about the $50,000.”

Finally, when the woman got home, she celebrated.

“You should have seen how happy my son was when I told him,” the woman told lottery officials.

The woman, who hasn’t decided how to spend her winnings, said she’ll let her son do all the game picking from now on.

Woodlawn is about a 10-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.
