Charlotte City Council voted 10-1 Tuesday to support draft legislation that would put a sales tax increase to pay for transportation on Mecklenburg County ballots.

Matthews leaders voted previously to oppose the plan, and Cornelius voted to support it. Mecklenburg County and the county’s other towns will vote on the bill over the next two weeks. It’s up to the state Legislature to decide whether to take up the draft legislation.

The bill lays out:

  • The text of a referendum to increase Mecklenburg County sales tax by 1 cent to pay for transportation needs and how new revenue would be divided between rail, bus and road projects

  • The future of the Red Line commuter rail project

  • A new transit authority to govern the Charlotte Area Transit System.
