North Carolina local and state office hopefuls are gearing up for the upcoming 2022 election season. Statewide primary and municipal elections are swiftly approaching and soon enough, the mid-term election will take place to determine which congressional candidates will be chosen to represent constituents on Capitol Hill.

What happens before the statewide primary?

Before local and state candidates can run for office and far in advance of their election, they must first “file a notice of candidacy form,” according to the North Carolina Board of Elections (NCSBE) website.

The filing period for candidates who want to run for office in North Carolina’s 2022 primary elections is set to resume this Thursday, Feb. 24, and end Friday, March 4. The period will also include filing for rescheduled municipal elections from last year.

How candidates can file, from being registered to age

As stated by NCSBE, those who file for candidacy must meet a variety of general requirements. “Unless otherwise specified, all candidates must be registered to vote in the state, qualified to vote in an election for the office sought, and 21 years old by the date of the general election.”

Specific requirements differ depending on which office eligible candidates decide to run for. Eligible candidates are only permitted to file for candidacy of one position per election.

What local positions are open for candidates in Charlotte and Mecklenburg?

For local elections in Mecklenburg County, the filing period taking place between Feb. 24 and March 4 will accept filings from eligible candidates who wish to run for the following positions:

  • City of Charlotte City Council At-Large (Delayed from 2021)

  • City of Charlotte City Council Districts 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, and 07 (Delayed from 2021)

  • City of Charlotte Mayor (Delayed from 2021)

  • Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners At-Large

  • Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners Districts 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, and 06

  • Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court

  • Mecklenburg County Sheriff

Statewide primary and rescheduled elections will take place Tuesday, May 17, 2022 while the statewide general election is set to take place on Tuesday Nov. 8, 2022.

What happens in a second primary or runoff election?

If necessary, second primary elections and municipal runoff elections will take place on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 if no federal office is involved and Tuesday, July 26, 2022 if a federal office is involved. The latter date will also be the date that second municipal elections will be held if there are no second primary contests, according to NCSBE.
