Democratic VP nominee Tim Walz to launch door-knocking volunteers in Charlotte, Matthews

Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz will launch canvassers in a key area of Mecklenburg County as part of a campaign swing through North Carolina Wednesday.

Walz, the governor of Minnesota, will launch a canvassing campaign in Matthews, the Mecklenburg Democratic Party announced Tuesday. Canvassers will then go door-to-door campaigning for the Harris-Walz ticket and down-ballot Democrats in Matthews and south Charlotte.

Charlotte-area Democrats have put a major focus on driving up turnout in Mecklenburg County, a Democratic stronghold prone to low voter turnout, this election cycle. More than 5,200 volunteers have knocked on more than 281,000 doors during the campaign, Mecklenburg Democrats said Tuesday.

In addition to the presidential race, southeast Mecklenburg is also home to two competitive General Assembly races considered important to deciding the balance of power in Raleigh: Rep. Tricia Cotham’s reelection campaign against Nicole Sidman and the state senate race between Stacie McGinn and Woodson Bradley.

Walz is also slated to attend a “community concert” in Asheville Wednesday.

Walz’s running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, will also be in North Carolina Wednesday for a rally in Raleigh. Former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, will counter-program with his own rally in Rocky Mount.

The latest polls show a tight race in North Carolina.

An Elon University poll released Tuesday has the presidential contest tied, with Harris and Trump each getting support from 46% of respondents. A WRAL poll also released Tuesday showed the race tied at 47%, with 2% of respondents saying they plan to vote for a third-party candidate and 4% undecided.
