Snow and ice close or delay schools in Iredell, Lincoln, other areas of NC
Snow and ice that hit parts of North Carolina on Tuesday prompted Iredell-Statesville Schools to close and other districts to change their schedules.
Bad road conditions and a forecast that remained below freezing prompted the Iredell closure, the district posted on Facebook. All athletic events and other after-school activities are canceled.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell warned on Facebook: “Beautiful snowfall blanketed Iredell County early this morning, but with the colder temperatures, roads are icy — especially on bridges.”
Schools in Mooresville were on a two-hour delay.
Lincoln County Schools are operating on a two-hour delay because of black ice on roads, the school district posted on Facebook. Catawba County Schools delayed their opening by two hours.
Tuesday is a remote learning day for students in Rowan-Salisbury schools because of bad road conditions, the school district posted on Facebook and in a message to parents.
Schools in Ashe County in northwest North Carolina were operating remotely Tuesday, schools in Watauga County are using remote learning Tuesday and schools in Alexander County operated on a two-hour delay, Observer news partner WSOC-TV reported.
Avery County schools operated remotely on Monday and again Tuesday, according to the district website.
Charlotte forecast
Tuesday’s high temperature in Charlotte was expected to reach 42 degrees under sunny skies, and a “hard freeze” is likely to linger through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
The temperature is forecast to drop to 21 overnight Tuesday, rebound to 38 overnight Wednesday and plummet again to 22 overnight Thursday and 23 overnight Friday, NWS meteorologists said.
Overnight Saturday, NWS forecasters predict a low at the freezing mark of 32 degrees, before the low is expected to improve to 40 overnight Sunday, according to the NWS.
The NWS forecasts highs of 49 on Wednesday, 54 on Thursday, 43 on Friday, 49 on Saturday, 55 on Sunday and 58 on Monday.
All sunshine is expected through the week, with a 40% chance of rain on Monday, the NWS Charlotte forecast showed.
Tuesday morning, the NWS warned of slick roads and bridges after 1.5 inches of snow fell across areas just north and northwest of Charlotte. Temperatures in the 20s.
“Use extra caution if traveling across the area this morning and allow for additional time to reach your destination,” NWS meteorologists said in a special weather statement. “Temperatures are expected to warm above freezing across most of the area between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.”
