Jordan Spieth, who was unbeaten last fall in his Presidents Cup matches at Quail Hollow, has announced he’ll be in the field for next week’s Wells Fargo Championship.
Spieth, the world’s 10th-ranked golfer, was 5-0 in his matches with the U.S. team last September.
The Wells Fargo Championship will be played next week at the Quail Hollow Club.
Spieth’s entrance in the field means at least six of the world’s top 10-ranked golfers will be in the Wells Fargo field.
Spieth is a 13-time winner on the PGA Tour, but he has not played in the Wells Fargo Championship since 2013, when he was 19 years old and tied for 32nd place.
He has won three majors – the 2015 Masters, 2015 U.S. Open and 2017 British Open. And he has five top-10 finishes in his 10 PGA Tour starts this season. Spieth was fourth in the Masters and lost in a playoff for Matthew Fitzpatrick in last week’s RBC Heritage Open in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Players have until 5 p.m. Friday to commit to the 156-player Wells Fargo field.
Other top-10 golfers headed to Charlotte are Rory McIlroy (No. 3), Patrick Cantlay (4), Xander Schauffele (5), Fitzpatrick (6) and Max Homa (7).
Top-ranked Jon Rahm, who is playing in this weekend’s Mexican Open, told reporters earlier this week that he plans to take the next two weeks off. Other top-10 golfers are Scottie Scheffler (2), Cameron Smith (8) and Will Zalatoris (9).
Practice rounds are set for Monday, with pro-am events Tuesday and Wednesday. The tournament’s first round will be next Thursday.
