Independence High's Preston Davis named AP coach of the year

Independence High boys basketball coach Preston Davis is the 2017-18 Associated Press N.C. coach of the year.

Davis was selected by a 16-person statewide media panel, including the Observer.

Davis, the Observer's coach of the year in Mecklenburg County, led Independence to its first N.C. 4A state championship since 1997. Davis was a player on the '97 team. Independence also won the Observer's Sweet 16 poll championship.
