Observer area high school football games to watch this week:
Charlotte Catholic (3-1, 0-0 Southern Carolina 3A) at Monroe (3-1, 0-0), Friday, 7:30: Since losing to 4A Vance 36-20 on Aug. 24, Monroe has beaten 4A Hopewell and 2A Marshville Forest Hills by a combined score of 104-41. Catholic shook off some early season struggles in a 51-0 win over Ardrey Kell Sept. 7 and was off last week.
Mallard Creek (3-0, 0-0 I-MECK) vs. Vance (4-0, 0-0) at UNC Charlotte, Saturday, 8: Mallard Creek is averaging 55 points per game under new offensive coordinator D.J. McFadden, a big jump over the past two years when the Mavericks were averaging a little over 30. Vance has outscored its past two opponents 93-7. This is a monster conference opener.
North Mecklenburg (4-0, 0-0 I-MECK) at Mooresville (4-0, 0-0), Friday, 7:30: New Mooresville coach Thad Wells has already matched the Blue Devils win total from 2017, when Mooresville was 4-8 and averaged 14 points per game. North Meck will present the Blue Devils with their biggest challenge of the season. The Vikings have topped 40 points twice.
Weddington (4-0, 0-0 I-MECK) at Indian Trail Sun Valley (4-0, 0-0), Friday, 7:30: Weddington plays two teams that are, like the Warriors, serious contenders to win the Southern Carolinas championship over the next two Fridays — at Sun Valley this week and at Charlotte Catholic on Sept. 28. Sun Valley is averaging 40 points per game and has won three of its first four games on the road.
