Wednesday’s Rewind: Snow changes schedule; Mallard Creek girls set finals date with Vance.

Weather: a wintry mix is expected in the area Thursday. Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union County Schools have canceled all athletic activities Thursday. Virtually all games in the Observer coverage area originally scheduled for Thursday were postponed or moved back to Wednesday. Also the NCHSAA playoff seeding has been pushed back one day to Sunday. Vance-Mallard Creek I-MECK final: Sweet 16 No. 2 Mallard Creek and No. 4 Vance girls both won semifinal games to set up a high-level I-MECK 4A conference final at Vance (date/time TBD). Vance (22-4) has won 13 straight games. Mallard Creek (22-2) has won seven straight. Mallard Creek beat Vance 61-58 Dec 10 at Mallard Creek. Vance avenged that loss with a 47-36 win at Vance Jan. 24.

Wild finish between East Lincoln-North Lincoln: in the South Fork 2A semis Wednesday, North’s Jack Carter hit a 45-footer that would’ve won the game but he was fouled before the shot. In overtime, North’s Cole Seagle hit a 3 to tie in OT before East sophomore Jeremiah Jones hit a runner with two seconds left for a 71-69 win at the buzzer. In the game, East Lincoln coach Jon Hancock won his 400th game. Justin Kuthan finished with 33 points, 16 rebounds for the Mustangs (Hat tip @scott_fowler).

Chyna Cornwell, Newton-Conover girls: 40 points in a 76-35 win over East Lincoln for the Rutgers recruit.

Leah Barringer, Vance: 18 points, five rebounds, four assists in a 79-62 win over North Meck in the I-MECK 4A semifinals. Megan Jackson had 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and three blocks. Trinity Moreland (13 points, seven rebounds, four assists), Kyanna Morgan (12 points, seven assists, six rebounds) and Amhyia Moreland (10 points, 11 rebounds, five assists) had big games. North Meck got 30 points, eight rebounds from Jessica Timmons.

Dane Bertolina, Charlotte Catholic: 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals in a 43-27 win over Weddington in the Southern Carolinas semifinals. Teammates Imelda McMenamin (19 points, four rebounds) and Cameron Green (11 points, seven rebounds) had big games.

Nevaeh Brown, Mallard Creek: 25 points, four assists, three steals in an 84-52 win over Hopewell in the I-MECK semifinals. Lauren Walker made four 3-point shots and had 20 points, two assists and two steals. Freshman Samyha Suffren had 22 points, three assists and three steals.

Natalie Hamlin, Lincoln Charter: season-high 21 points in a 60-27 win over Thomas Jefferson in the semifinals of the Southern Piedmont tournament.

Jimena Vazquez, Forestview: 20 points, 17 rebounds, four blocks in a 56-45 win over Kings Mountain in the Big South 3A semifinals. Kianna Robinson had a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) for Forestview. Saniya Wilson had 20 points for Kings Mountain.

Wednesday’s #BIG5 Boys Top Performers

Donovan Atwell, Lake Norman Charter: 30 points in a 60-53 win over Lincolnton in the South Fork semifinals. Atwell hit six 3-point shots and all four of his free throws.

Quashawn Carpenter, North Rowan: made four 3-point shots and finished with 20 points in a 57-44 win over Uwharrie Charter. Teammate Brandon White had 14 rebounds.

James Freeman, Freedom: 36 points in a 78-61 win over South Caldwell in the Northwestern semifinals. Bradley Davis had 21 points. Trey Ramsey had 25 for South Caldwell.

Jem Lowrance, Alexander Central: 16 points, six rebounds, two assists in a 48-44 over Hickory.

Chris Lyttle, Patton: game-high 23 points in a 76-68 win over West Caldwell.

Tuesday’s Rewind: Independence keeps winning

Porter Ridge: beat Butler for the first time in school history.

Vance balance: In an 83-56 win over Hopewell in the I-MECK tournament, Vance had four double figure scorers: Daniel Sanford (20 points), Jaylen Curry (18), Trey Green (15) and Dexter Hart (11).

Independence: Patriots won their seventh straight game Tuesday, beating East Meck 75-29 in the first round of the Southwestern 4A. Anthony Allen had 21 points for the Patriots (18-7).

North Meck: Vikings are No. 24 in ESPN’s national rankings this week. Ranked No. 1 in the Observer’s Sweet 16, North Meck beat Mooresville 94-57 in the first round of the I-MECK 4A conference tournament Tuesday. Chris Ford (21 points, 11 rebounds, five assists), Tristan Maxwell (21 points), Jeremy Gregory (15 points, five rebounds) and Jordan Crawford (12 points) led the Vikings.

AJ Cook, Weddington: sophomore had 14 points, four rebounds in a 68-33 win over Piedmont in the first round of the Southern Carolinas tournament.

Andrew Hendershott, Christ The King: 29 points, seven steals in a 64-48 win over Highland Tech in the first round of the Southern Piedmont 1A tournament. He also scored his 1,000th career point in the game.

Monti McIlwain, Antonio Pruitt, West Mecklenburg: 16 points for McIlwain and 15 for Pruitt as West Meck upset South Mecklenburg 51-45 in the first round of the SoMECK 7 conference tournament. West Meck (11-14) finished sixth of seven teams in the regular-season. South Meck (12-11) was third.

Jackson Threadgill, Davidson Day: 32 points, four steals in a 91-44 win over Raleigh’s Trinity Academy in a N.C. Independent Schools 2A quarterfinal.

Marcus Willis, Porter Ridge: team-high 20 points in a 69-67 win over Butler in the first round of the Southwestern 4A tournament.

Averie DiBenedetto, Independence: 18 points, 10 steals, seven rebounds and three assists in a 68-16 win over Porter Ridge in the first round of the Southwestern 4A tournament.

Jasmine Fearne, Hickory Ridge: 20 points, four rebounds, three steals in a 76-28 win over Rocky River in the Southwestern 4A tournament. Teammates Kennedy Calhoun (18 points, eight steals, six assists) and Maya Henry (10 points, eight rebounds, three steals) had big games.

Riley Haas, East Burke: team-high 17 points in a 66-23 win over West Caldwell.

Taylor Henderson, Myers Park: scored a game-high 22 points in a 76-24 win over East Meck in the first round of the Southwestern 4A tournament.

Aniyah Tate, Central Cabarrus: 25 points, 11 rebounds, six steals in a win over AL Brown in the semifinals of the South Piedmont tournament. Teammates Ja’el Miller (12 points, five assists) and Mariah Barrie (12 points, 10 rebounds) had big games.

Vance girls balance: In a 64-26 win over Mooresville in the I-MECK 4A tournament, Vance got strong performances from Leah Barringer (15 points, four rebounds, three assists), Tanajah Hayes (14 points, seven steals, six assists) and Kyanna Morgan (12 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals)

Meghan Rogers, Ardrey Kell: became the school’s all-time leader in assists during Monday’s 70-44 win over West Mecklenburg in the first round of the SoMECK tournament. Rogers now holds the school’s single game, single season and career assists records.

East Lincoln: Mustangs beat Bandys 88-38 and won their eighth straight game and their 15th in 16 tries.

Lillian Anderson, Cuthbertson: scored her 1,000th careeer point during Monday’s 67-32 win over Monroe. She led all scorers with 19.

Jada Brigman, Olympic girls: game-high 24 points in a 38-33 win over Berry in the first round of the SoMECK tournament. Berry will play regular-season champion Providence in the semifinals Wednesday.

Chyna Cornwell, Newton-Conover girls: recorded her 2,000th career rebound in a 73-25 win over West Lincoln. Cornwell finished with 32 points, 17 rebounds.

Jeremiah Jones, East Lincoln: 14 points, 10 assists in a 88-38 win over Bandys.

Senali Moss, South Mecklenburg girls: first career quadruple-double in Monday’s 58-4 win over Harding in the first of the SoMECK girls tournament. Randy Moss’ daughter had 18 points, 13 steals, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.

Saniya Wilson, Kings Mountain: 30 points, seven steals, four rebounds, four assists in a 68-47 win over Crest.
