No. 2 North Meck rolls; No. 1 Vance girls stop Mallard Creek; teams benched due to COVID
Myers Park High School will not play its first two games of the 2021 boys high school basketball season after a Mustangs player tested positive for COVID-19.
Myers Park was scheduled to play two home games — against Garinger on Wednesday and against Rocky River on Friday. Mustangs coach Scott Taylor said those games will rescheduled.
Myers Park’s game with Butler, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 12, has been moved to Wednesday, Jan. 13, due to scheduling issues with other sports, Taylor said.
A Mustangs player who practiced with the team Saturday received a positive test Tuesday, Taylor said. Due to contract tracing, multiple players on his team will have to quarantine for 10 days from last Saturday, per N.C. High School Athletic Association protocol.
“I think that coaches who have been working through this since the beginning of fall have some understanding that it’s going to happen to someone someday,” Taylor said, “whether it’s your team or someone you’ll play against. It was a little unfortunate that it was about 30 hours before we were going to play our first game.”
Myers Park’s COVID case is coming at the same time that N.C. Governor Roy Cooper said he is extending North Carolina’s modified stay-at-home order for three weeks, including a curfew.
The stay-at-home order requires people to stay home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
North Carolina has been under Phase 3 of restrictions since the fall, an executive order that has been extended several times. It was set to expire Friday.
The NCHSAA canceled high school sports in March due to the pandemic and began to allow teams to have offseason workouts in June. Private schools began sports in the fall, including football, but the public schools didn’t resume sports until November.
High school basketball began Monday, and football is scheduled to begin next month. Both seasons have been shortened. Basketball teams will play 14 regular-season games over seven weeks.
Wednesday night was scheduled to be the first night of games for CMS schools. Taylor is disappointed his team won’t be able to play.
“For us, it makes a seven-week season into a six-week season,” Taylor said. “But it makes you appreciate playing more when you get the chance. I just told the guys that we’ll have half our season with three games in a week so they’ll have more game and less practice time, so they won’t have to listen to me so much.”
▪ Charlotte Catholic’s season-opening games with Piedmont have been postponed, Charlotte Catholic athletic director Kevin Christmas told the Observer. Piedmont’s boys and girls teams are quarantining, Christmas said.
No. 1 Vance girls stop No. 3 Mallard Creek
The final game of the 2019-20 high school girls basketball season was between Vance and Mallard Creek. The N.C. girls powerhouses met in Hickory in the N.C. 4A Western Regional championship game.
Vance dominated defensively and advanced to a state championship that was never played. The N.C. High School Athletic Association declared Vance and Eastern Regional champion Southeast Raleigh as co-state champions.
Wednesday night, Vance began its journey to get back to the state finals, beating Mallard Creek with another dominant defensive performance.
Vance, No. 1 in the Observer’s Sweet 16, won 45-36 at Mallard Creek in the season-opener for both teams. Only 25 fans were allowed in and players wore masks. There was no jump ball.
Mallard Creek is No. 3 in the Sweet 16.
Amhiya Moreland led Vance with 18 points and Tanajah Hayes had 12. Vance limited Mallard Creek to five points in a decisive fourth quarter.
UNC-Greensboro recruit Kennedy Simpson had 16 for Mallard Creek.
