Tuesday’s NC high school basketball scores, next round pairings

Girls Rewind: No. 1 Cannon, No. 4 South Meck fall

No. 2 Carmel Christian holds off No. 8 Latin, advances

Carmel Christian broke open a tie game with a 7-0 run late in the fourth quarter Tuesday night and beat visiting Charlotte Latin 54-44, advancing to the boys’ state championship game for the fifth time in six years.

The Cougars (25-3) will face Greensboro Day (32-3) for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 4A title Saturday at Wingate University.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

But coach Joe Badgett’s team got a strong test from Charlotte Latin (23-4), in a game played before a noisy full-house crowd.

The Hawks led 34-32 after three quarters, and the game was tied at 37-37. But Carmel Christian pulled away, scoring on a free throw and then on baskets by Kyle Bean and Cade Tyson.

The Cougars’ Logan Threatt made it 44-37 on a tip-in with 1:50 remaining, and after a Charlotte Latin free throw, Tyson scored on a dunk that produced the loudest roar from the Cougars’ crowd of the night.

The Hawks battled back, cutting the deficit to 48-42 with 36 seconds left, scoring on a pair of baskets by Jaylen Jones.

Charlotte Latin closed to within 49-44 with 27 seconds left after another Jones basket, but Bean gave Carmel Christian a three-possession lead at 51-44 on a layup with 16 seconds remaining.

Hopewell spring another upset, takes down Ardrey Kell

Quay Watson had 21 for the Titans.

Ardrey Kell reached the state finals last season.

Hopewell jumped out to a 10-0 lead Tuesday and held on for a 51-49 win. Ardrey Kell’s had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but the shot rimmed out, preventing the Knights rallying eight points down with 60 seconds left to force overtime.

The Knights (17-6) were playing without Division I point guard Evan Smith, who sprained his ankle in Friday’s SoMECK championship game with Harding.
