Thursday’s girls rewind: No. 1 Lake Norman makes big statement vs. No. 4 Mallard Creek
Note: Tuesday’s coverage is below. Scroll down.
Mallard Creek’s girls basketball team came out and tried to run with No. 1 Lake Norman in a second round N.C. 4A playoffs Thursday.
The Mavericks, No. 4 in the poll, were fresh off ending North Mecklenburg’s 19-game win streak in the Queen City conference tournament championship game. And that was the same North Meck that came within a buzzer-beater of beating Lake Norman on the road earlier this season.
So this was no ordinary second round game.
And, sure enough, Mallard Creek jumped out to a 7-0 lead, pressing and trapping a Lake Norman team that likes to do that to everyone else. Eventually, though, Lake Norman settled down and started making barrels of 3-point shots and simply wore down the Mavericks with speed and pressure.
The Wildcats 80-61 win was certainly impressive and should send a message throughout the state as the third round approaches Saturday.
These Wildcats (28-0) are nothing to play with.

NCHSAA to determine regional championship sites next week
N.C. High School Athletic Association spokesperson James Alverson told The Observer that the association will announce regional championship sites early next week.
The NCHSAA regional semifinals will be held Tuesday with the regional championships on Saturday, March 4. Last year, two Charlotte-area boys teams, Weddington and North Mecklenburg, played a regional championship game in Marion, about a two-hour drive from uptown Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools athletic director Ericia Turner said six CMS schools have contacted the NCHSAA offering to potentially host the regionals: Butler, Harding, Hough, Independence, Rocky River and West Mecklenburg.
Alverson said several additional schools in the western part of the state had also inquired about hosting the regionals and more western schools than those in the east had expressed interest.
