Saturday’s Rewind: Mecklenburg County dominance. Area teams head to quarterfinals
Note: Tuesday’s and Thursday coverage is below. Scroll down.
Saturday night was huge for Mecklenburg County’ s public school basketball teams playing in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.
4A West Boys
In the 4A West boys playoffs, all four remaining teams are from Mecklenburg County. That means somebody local is going to the state finals.
Myers Park, Charlotte Catholic, North Mecklenburg and Chambers all advanced, setting up a pair of juicy state quarterfinal games.
Myers Park, No. 2 in The Sweet 16, beat Asheville Reynolds 74-42 Saturday to set up Tuesday’s home game with Charlotte Catholic. Myers Park set a school-record with its 25th win.
Catholic upset Grimsley 44-43 on a buzzer-beating bucket from center Pat Tivnan.
And North Mecklenburg whipped East Forsyth 88-55 and will host a familiar opponent Tuesday -- Julius Chambers HIgh School
Chambers went to Mount Tabor, one of the toughest places to win in North Carolina, and pulled off a 57-53 upset.
So Chambers will play North Mecklenburg for the fourth time this season. North Meck will be the home team.
Earlier this year, Chambers won at North Meck. North Meck won at Chambers and North Meck won the Queen City 3A/4A tournament title over Chambers at Hough High School.
▪ West Charlotte plays with North Meck and Chambers in regular-season play but participates in the 3A playoffs. The Lions entered the playoffs on a five-game losing streak but are now in the quarterfinals after Saturday’s 85-58 win at Northwest Cabarrus. West Charlotte will play at Greensboro’s Ben Smith High Tuesday.
4A West Girls
Two of the four remaining teams are from Mecklenburg County. A third is from neighboring Iredell County.
North Mecklenburg beat Asheville Reynolds 56-37 and Charlotte Catholic beat previously unbeaten Northern Guilford 58-53.
So both teams advance to quarterfinals.
North Mecklenburg will play at Lake Norman, a rematch of a very close regular-season game that unbeaten and Sweet 16 No. 1 Lake Norman won on its last possession.
Charlotte Catholic will play at Watauga in a game that matches two of the state’s best players: Catholic center Blanca Thomas, a top 10 national recruit in the junior class, and Watauga’s Kate Sears.

Thursday’s rewind: North Meck’s Isaiah Evans has another big night
Tuesday night, Duke men’s basketball coach Jon Scheyer came to watch North Mecklenburg’s Isaiah Evans play in the first round of the N.C. 4A playoffs.
Evans had 34 points in a blowout win over West Cabarrus.
Apparently, Evans was just warming up. He went for 44 points in Thursday’s second round 86-61 win over Hopewell. Evans was just one point shy of his season-high of 45 points he had at rival Chambers last month.
It was the fourth time Evans has scored 40 points this season. He has had eight games with 35 or more points.
NCHSAA to determine regional championship sites next week
N.C. High School Athletic Association spokesperson James Alverson told The Observer that the association will announce regional championship sites early next week.
The NCHSAA regional semifinals will be held Tuesday with the regional championships on Saturday, March 4. Last year, two Charlotte-area boys teams, Weddington and North Mecklenburg, played a regional championship game in Marion, about a two-hour drive from uptown Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools athletic director Ericia Turner said six CMS schools have contacted the NCHSAA offering to potentially host the regionals: Butler, Harding, Hough, Independence, Rocky River and West Mecklenburg.
Alverson said several additional schools in the western part of the state had also inquired about hosting the regionals and more western schools than those in the east had expressed interest.

Tuesday’s Rewind: West Charlotte hoping for another title run
West Charlotte High, the reigning N.C. 3A state champion, entered the 2023 playoffs on a five-game losing streak, and Lions coach Jacoby Davis thinks everybody on the team — including him — had a hand in that.
“We’ve just been struggling doing the things we know we can do,” Davis said after Tuesday’s 61-58 first-round playoff win at Franklin “We’ve been up on some of the best teams in the state and we’re not finishing. I think it comes from our leadership, and that’s on me, too. We’ve been talking about it. The No. 1 thing last year was that we were playing for each other.”
Tuesday night, Davis said he saw signs that this Lions’ team was beginning to do the same thing. Seeded No. 22 of 32 teams in the 3A Western bracket, the Lions road to a repeat state championship will literally be on the road, and Davis thinks that means the Lions will be forced to lean on each other.
At Franklin, West Charlotte jumped out to a 37-22 lead at halftime before Franklin made 10 second half 3-point shots and got within two, as the Lions struggled from the free-throw line.
“We missed about 10 free throws in the second half,” Davis said.
But unlike earlier games against 4A powers Chambers and North Mecklenburg, the Lions didn’t lose the lead — or lose the game.
“We’re talented enough to beat anybody,” Davis said, “if our kids decide they want to do it. We’ve got to play a complete 32-minute game. I don’t think we’ve done that all year.”
But Tuesday was a start. Guards Ollie Alford and Chad Traylor, among the heroes of last year’s state title win, combined for 28 points, and the pair provided leadership late in a close game.
Davis thinks his team may finally have the positive momentum it’s been looking for.
“I think our guys are tough,” Davis said. “And I told them it’s tough to lake losses and it’s the way we’ve been losing, losing winnable games. So sometimes, like that, it can be easy to give up. But they fought tonight. I’m hoping this can kind of be how it was last year, we won our first playoff game and it kind of clicked.
“I’m hoping that is what this does.”
