High School Rewind: Charlotte Catholic golfer named to US Junior Ryder Cup team.
Charlotte Catholic golfer Will Hartman will soon be packing his bags for Rome.
Hartman, who won the 2022 N.C. 4A state high school championship as a freshman, was named to the US Junior Ryder Cup team Wednesday.
The team consists of 12 of the country’s top boys and girls junior golfers who will compete in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup from September 26-28 in Rome, Italy.
The 2023 edition of the Junior Ryder Cup marks the first time the event will take place over three days instead of two.
The US team is seeking its seventh straight victory over the Europeans and owns a 7-3-1 all-time record in the biennial competition. The US team features six boys and six girls who are U.S. citizens and members of the high school graduating class of 2024 or younger.
Past European and US Junior Ryder Cup winners include golf superstars Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau and Rory McIllroy.
Hartman, a 17-year-old rising junior from Marvin, is the 19th-ranked junior on the Rolex AJGA rankings. He won the 28th annual Bobby Chapman in October 2022 and he finished T-5 at the 2023 Junior PGA Championship and T3 at the 2023 United States Junior Amateur Championship.
Hartman won the N.C. 4A state championship as a freshman in 2022, when he was named The Observer’s boys golfer of the year. As a sophomore, Hartman finished in a tie for 18th at the 2023 N.C. 4A state finals.
